JUNIOR GOLF
Sunningdale Ladies Golf Club has always been most proud of its very active Junior Section.

Our Junior Section is headed up by Janet Cook and Peter Taylor.

A note from our Junior Captain for 2009 - Ben Smith, explains a little more about this most important aspect of our Club.

2009 witnesses our first hosting of a regional qualifier for the Wee Wonders Championship on May 30th and we certainly hope that this will be a future fixture for our Calendar.

On April 5th, a new course record was set by Liam Cox, during our Junior open event. Liam carded 1 under par, after a round of perfect golf.
Following several discussions with Juniors, we are now giving consideration to holding a second Junior Open event in early September. Many expressed the view that most Clubs host their Opens around Easter and in early May.
As most Juniors play the greatest proportion of their golf in the summer, they should in theory be in top playing condition just as the holdiays end and they return to school! Please watch this site for more news.............

A note from our Junior Captain:

I'd like to introduce myself, I am Ben Smith recently appointed captain of the junior section at SL. I am 14 years old and attend Reading School. My handicap is currently 13 but, like all of you, I want this to be lower come the end of the year.

My brother Luke (11 years old) and I have been members for 4 years now and know what it is like being new and not at all familiar with the course so if any of you want to play a few holes then we are happy for you to join us. We are also glad to give advice to any of you about competitions or information you want to know.

This year I am going to reintroduce the captain's day competition. In the past it has been "3 clubs and a putter" but this year I am hoping to do something new that will include all junior members with or without handicaps.

There are a lot of other tournaments to look forward to and I have attached a full fixture list so you can write the dates in your diary. Most of these are for members with handicaps so if you don't yet have one, then you can get another junior or adult, with a handicap, to mark you 3 cards. Then hand them into the handicap secretary who will issue you with your handicap.

For those of you under the age of 13, I would like to inform you that there is a tournament coming up called the WEE Wonders. This is a regional competition, in which girls and boys compete separately in different age groups, playing 36 shots, and seeing how far round the course they can get. The person who gets the furthest with their 36 shots goes through to one of 9 Regional finals where you would then have a chance to go to St Andrews, the home of Golf, for the grand final.

There are loads of Qualifiers up and down the country but luckily for us.......... One of them is being held at Sunningdale Ladies so get practising!

For more information on the rules and how to register go to www.hsbcweewonders.com
The date for Sunningdale Ladies is the 30th May…………Apply now to secure your place!

Sadly, I am too old to compete this year but Luke will be there to offer you support.

Last year Sam Wood, another junior member, made it all the way to Scotland and in previous years Luke and I have made it through to the regional finals. This is great for juniors of any age, even my youngest brother James, who is 7, made it through last year.

We have a great year ahead of us, and I hope to meet you all at the club soon and continue to see you there throughout this year.

Ben.
